TOKYO, May 31, Kyodo

A Tokyo court sentenced former Japanese baseball star Kazuhiro Kiyohara on Tuesday to two years and six months in prison, suspended for four years, for possessing, using and purchasing illegal drugs.

The Tokyo District Court let the 48-year-old former Seibu Lions and Yomiuri Giants slugger walk free, although the defense counsel had requested a suspended term with probation.

Probation would have required Kiyohara to seek rehabilitation under a state-sponsored program to prevent recidivism in ex-offenders.
