Masahiro Tanaka worked seven scoreless innings to outduel former teammate Hisashi Iwakuma and earn the win as the New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-0 on Wednesday.
Tanaka (11-4), who succeeded Iwakuma as the ace of the Rakuten Eagles in Nippon Professional Baseball’s Pacific League, turned in a vintage performance, consistently getting ahead of hitters and becoming a bulldog with runners in scoring position.
“The best thing about today’s game was that even when runners were on I didn’t give in and kept them from scoring,” said Tanaka, who pitched with Iwakuma for the first five years of his pro career.
