David Lynch’s masterpiece “Mulholland Drive” has been named the greatest film of the 21st century, while Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” ranked fourth, according to a BBC poll.
“Mulholland Drive” and “Spirited Away” were both released in 2001. Wong Kar-wai’s “In the Mood for Love (2000)” came in second, Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood (2007)” third and Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood (2014)” fifth.
The list of 100 films was picked by 177 film critics from around the world. It includes the year 2000, which BBC thinks “was a landmark in global cinema, and, in particular, saw the emergence of new classics from Asia like nothing we had ever seen before.”
Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” is an anime fantasy film that won such prizes as the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 2003 Academy Awards and the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival.
