ULAN BATOR, June 10, Kyodo
Japan’s Finance Minister Taro Aso, known as a “manga” comic enthusiast, met Friday an award-winning Mongolian cartoonist in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator, where the minister was visiting to attend the Asia Europe Meeting of finance ministers.
Aso met with Nambaral Erdenebayar, who won the top prize in the 2015 International Manga Award contest hosted by the Japanese government to honor works produced abroad. The award was set up in 2007 under the initiative of Aso, then foreign minister, to promote Japan’s manga culture.
Aso praised the uniqueness of his style and touch, saying, “It’s very different from those in Japanese manga. You should not change the unique touch.”
Erdenebayar’s work titled “Bumbardai” was published as an e-book in Japan. The cartoonist told the minister that he has so far completed volume four and hopes to draw up to 108 volumes.
